Family, Community, Country

IMG_4258

Over the course of the past month our students have been blessed with many wonderful experiences at school and in our Mt. Vernon Community.

Many of these experiences have specifically honored Family, Community and Country.

During the first week of September our West Elementary School PTO invited Grandparents of our West students in for Breakfast before school.  Hundreds of students and their Grandparents attended the Grandparents Day Breakfast in our West Cafeteria enjoying donuts and pictures!

Also, towards the beginning of September our 4th Grade Students had the opportunity to learn more about local Indiana History during a Field Tript to River Days.  In addition, our West Student Council proudly represented our school in the River Days Parade.  We believe it is important for students to participate in local community traditions such as River Days to develop an understanding and appreciation of their own community.

On September 11th, our entire school - students and staff met at the flagpole to recite the Pledge of Allegiance together and have a moment of silence in honor of 9/11/01.  We were honored to be led by Gunnery Sgt. Benjamin Hartmann of the United States Marines Corps.  Benjamin Hartmann is a former MVHS graduate and father of two current West Elementary students.  We appreciate his sacrifice for our safety and freedom and will keep him in our thoughts as he sets out on a two year call to duty in Japan this next month.

Another meaningful opportunity for our students was the Spirit Week we had at West to coincide with MVHS Homecoming Week.  We believe that encouraging our students to support and participate in community activities such as these add significant value and treasured memories to their K-12 Education in the MSD of Mt. Vernon.

As we rounded out the last month full of Family, Community and Country, our 9th Annual West Elementary School Family Picnic was a Huge Success again this year!  Over 500 West students, family members, and staff members thoroughly enjoyed our tradition of Food and Fun!

We are proud of the experiences our students have had during the first quarter of the school year and cannot wait to see what the rest of the fall semester brings!

"Had myself a ball in a small town!"

Resized1

In 1985, John Cougar Mellencamp wrote the song “Small Town”. In 2013, Mellencamp told Rolling Stone, "I wanted to write a song that said, 'You don't have to live in New York or Los Angeles to live a full life or enjoy your life.' I was never one of those guys that grew up and thought, 'I need to get out of here.' It never dawned on me. I just valued having a family and staying close to friends.”

These sentiments have resonated with me since I moved to this community 36 years ago. You can have “a full life or enjoy your life” in Mt. Vernon. We have an incredible community in which to live and raise our children. We have all the benefits of living in a small town, but we are within a few hours of four major cities. We have an excellent school system that provides many opportunities for our students. People are always willing to help someone in need, which is not always true in other places. Mt. Vernon is a safe place for children to grow up.

In our schools, our sense of community is constantly on display. Our students help elementary students in our Peer Facilitator course. Student-athletes and band members volunteer to take All In Friday pep sessions on the road to our elementary schools and local businesses such as The Cox Group and CountryMark. We had an excellent turnout for our Homecoming Festival several weeks ago, and we are hosting an All In Friday Community Partner Tailgate event tonight before the football game. This event showcases many of our local businesses and philanthropic organizations, many of which we have strong partnerships.

Our community spirit is also evidenced in smaller, everyday acts of kindness. Each month, our various departments select students to be “Wildcat of the Month.” These students contribute to a positive school culture and community by exemplifying kindness, hard work, good manners, and a commitment to helping others.

Much like John Cougar Mellencamp's "Small Town" anthem, this community has demonstrated that a rich and meaningful life can thrive far from the bustling metropolises. It's a place where family values, close-knit friendships, and a commitment to helping others define the essence of daily life.

Wildcats of the Month for September of 2023:  Jack C., Halie D., Olivia G., Lily H., Reese H., Maiya J., Kiearra K., Jake L., and Mikayla M. (Not in the picture: Nate H. & Cassidy J.)

MT. VERNON HIGH SCHOOL DAILY BULLETIN
Friday, September 29 2023 - Maroon Day

STUDENTS:

  • Clubs will begin meeting next Wednesday, October 4.  Students should have received a Google form to select the clubs they would like to be in this year.  The form must be submitted by 3:30 this Friday (September 29).
  • When the word “college” is used, it doesn’t always mean a 4 year degree.  There are short term

certificates that take 1 year to complete and can get you a high paying job.  See the information

on the bulletin board outside of guidance and Mrs. Rose.

Today’s dress day:  Your future starts here.  Wear maroon/gray/white.  While in high school, get the best grades you can and participate in activities.  Consider taking on leadership roles.  This will make you the most appealing to colleges.  I hope you all had a great College Go Week and applied to at least 1 college.  If you need assistance with anything, please let me know!  Mrs. Rose

Wednesday, September 27, 2023 - Maroon Day

STUDENTS:

  • College Go Week!  Wednesday teacher trivia:  She has a Bachelor's degree from the University of Southern Indiana.  She changed her major once.  She was an elementary education major, but after hearing a Vietnam veteran speak, she changed her major to the area in which she teaches.  She lived on campus and thinks every kid should.  She was involved in campus outreach.  Something she would change:  I would have more fun with my friends and be more laid back.  Advice:  Live on campus and try new things.  Who is the mystery teacher?    Mrs. Wagner!!!

Tomorrow’s dress day is mismatch.  Make sure your college matches your needs.  Make sure it’s the right size, the right cost, and the right fit academically.

Seniors:  Don’t forget to check the list of colleges offering free applications this week.

We Are MV!!!

day-of-caring Principal Perspective

"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across waters to create many ripples."
Mother Teresa

As fall graces our town, we witness the changing leaves and shorter daylight on our daily commutes.  In Mt. Vernon, we’ve enjoyed community events like the Homecoming football game, River Days, United Way Day of Caring and honoring our fall sports programs.  At the Junior High, we’re busy with our annual Reality Store for 8th graders, inviting professionals to speak to 7th graders and gearing up for Family Fun Night in October.

All of this reminds me why I joined the field of public education - for our community, families, students and staff.  Public schools focus on people, nurturing our students’ growth and preparing them for life, careers, college and service.  I’m proud to be part of MSD of MV and the Junior High family, where our shared values include education, community involvement and supporting each other.

Having spent nearly 13 years in this community, I don’t get caught up in national news or social media; I know you, I know this town and I believe in its potential.  Our focus should be on what truly matters to us - our children, our community and our future.  Mt. Vernon Junior High is here to serve your needs, and while we may face challenges, we face them together and I hope they always lead to positive growth.

This fall, let’s celebrate our community and our shared values.  Let’s all remember that while we may not have the power to impact the world single-handedly, we can still cast a stone into the water to create countless ripples of positive change.
