Safety

Safety + Security

At MSD of Mt. Vernon, the safety of our students is our top priority. We are constantly evaluating our safety systems and protocols to ensure secure facilities across our five sites and our district office.

Safety is a critical priority in Indiana’s public school system because it creates the foundation for effective teaching and learning. When students and staff feel secure, they are better able to focus on academics, personal growth, and positive social interactions. A strong culture of safety—whether through secure facilities, clear emergency procedures, or proactive mental health supports—helps prevent disruptions, reduces the risk of harm, and fosters trust among families and the community. In a state where schools serve as central hubs for both education and community engagement, maintaining safe environments ensures that every child has the opportunity to learn and thrive without fear, while also protecting educators who dedicate themselves to student success.

Safety Tips from Assistant Superintendent Dr. Seifert

  • 1.

Please make sure not to prop interior or exterior doors open.  If you find an exterior door open, please close it and notify the office.

  • 2.

During passing periods in the halls and on recess, be attentive to students and your surroundings.

  • 3.

Whether it is in your classroom, in the school building, on a bus, or outside, if you see something, say something.  For immediate issues contact your office administration team, for less urgent matters please fill out the form located in the safety tab of the mvschool.org website.

Safety Spotlight: New Check-In Kiosks

Beginning in Fall 2025, MSDMV implemented a new system where every visitor has to present a photo ID in order to enter any of our five schools. Upon presenting the ID to administration, a limited background check will be completed to determine eligibility to enter the school. MSDMV took proacive steps to further improve safety through this new system. Screening visitors prior to entering the schools allows administrators to deny entry to individuals who should not be on school grounds and learn more about the guests inside our building at any given time.

These check-in kiosks are present at all five of our schools: Marrs Elementary School, Farmersville Elementary School, West Elementary School, Mt. Vernon Junior High School, and Mt. Vernon High School.
