Extracurricular Activities

ATHLETICS

Students in Grades 7 & 8 have the opportunity to participate in the following athletic activities on a competitive basis within the Southern Indiana Junior High School Athletic Conference: Football, Volleyball, Basketball, Wrestling, Track. Intramural and club activities are also available in cross country and swimming/diving.

Students in Grade 6 have the opportunity to participate in competitive athletics with other schools only in the area of Basketball. All other athletic opportunities are offered as intramural or club activities.

Athletic Locks

Being a member of a MVJHS athletic squad is a privilege for our students and carries several responsibilities. One of these responsibilities is purchasing an athletic lock from the school. Locks are $6.00 and can be used for an athlete's entire Junior High and High School career.  NO personal or PE locks will be allowed in the athletic locker rooms. If you have questions about this requirement, please contact Mr. Jones.

Athletes should purchase a lock during the first few weeks of their season from their coach. They do not have to purchase a new lock for each season in which they participate, unless they lose their athletic lock. After the initial few weeks of the season, if an athlete should happen to lose his/her lock, he/she needs to purchase a new athletic lock from the office for $6.00.

All athletes are encouraged to lock all of their school issued equipment and personal items in their locker whenever they leave the locker room. The office will maintain a list of lock serial numbers and corresponding combinations. This list will enable the identification of a lost lock.

CHEERLEADERS

At the end of each school year, students in Grades 6 & 7 try out for the two cheerleading squads offered at MVJHS. Five students are elected by a panel of judges and with teacher recommendation scores to represent each grade. Sixth graders do not have a cheerleading squad and must wait until Grade 7 to get involved in this extracurricular activity. One sponsor from the current staff handles the elections, selection of clothing, scheduling, rules & regulations, and camps for the students selected to be cheerleaders for the school year.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Student Council elections are held at the beginning of the school year. The Student Council is quite active at MVJHS and is involved in the following events and activities:
  • STUDENT COUNCIL DANCES & 6TH GRADE PARTY
  • STUDENT COUNCIL TEACHER APPRECIATION WEEK
  • STUDENT COUNCIL VOLUNTEER PROJECTS
  • STUDENT COUNCIL MEETINGS & LEADERSHIP WORKSHOPS
  • STUDENT COUNCIL FIELD TRIPS
  • STUDENT COUNCIL FOOD DRIVE
  • STUDENT COUNCIL DECORATION FOR SPECIAL EVENTS
Our student council for 2007 is a NASC Honor Council. We are 1 of only 18 councils in the nation to receive this honor!

INTRAMURALS

Intramural activities are also offered throughout the school year.

ACADEMIC TEAMS & COMPETITIONS

MVJHS currently participates in two major Academic Competitions throughout the year:
  • Hoosier Spell Bowl
  • Southern Indiana Junior High School Athletic Conference Academic Competition

The HOOSIER SPELL BOWL is a state-sponsored competition which focuses on spelling skills; a team of 8 students attempts to learn approximately 1500 words for a local competition. If their collective score is one of the top in the state at the local competition, then the team travels to Indianapolis in November for the state competition. Preparation for this competition begins prior to the end of each school year, sometimes including part of summer vacation.

The SIJHAC ACADEMIC COMPETITION is one of the most ambitious in the area or in the state. It includes competition in the areas of Public Speaking, Prose Interpretation, Poetry Recitation, Dramatic Interpretation, Spelling, Art, Home Economics, Math, Science, Current Events, and the CONSTITUTION. Teams from each grade level prepare for a Quiz Bowl which covers math, science, and current events; 8th graders have questions covering the CONSTITUTION as well. Prizes include ribbons, plaques, and trophies for the top-scoring school at each grade level.
